On Wednesday 17th February TES held the annual Y6 to 8 sports day at Salmiya stadium. It was a beautiful day and many parents came to watch the events of the day unfold. Year 6/7 and 8 arrived at the stadium extremely excited about the day ahead. The morning began with the field events. The five year groups: Y6 boys, Y6 girls, Y7 boys, Y7/8 girls and Y8 boys moved around each field event with 2 competitors from each house competing in each of the field events. The field events included the discus, shot putt, javelin, triple jump, long jump and high jump. Each competitor scored points for their house and the top three positions gained ribbons for their performances. There were a number of fantastic performances and a number of records set. To set a record on sports day is a great achievement, especially as the records are now in their 7th year and some superb athletes names who have come through TES over the years are on the school records.
After the field events the pupils moved to the stands to eat lunch before the track events began. The track events included 90m, 200m, 300m, 400m, 600m, 800m, relay and a shuttle relay race. Everyone in all year groups took part and contributed towards their overall house total on the day. The track races were fantastic and it was extremely pleasing to see the desire and hard work shown from all of the athletes. The ‘never say die’ attitude of the TES children was very evident in their endeavour to complete the races to the best of their ability. There were some quite outstanding performances on the track and as with the field events a number of records were set. The shuttle relay at the end provided an opportunity for pupils to run in an event as a year group in their houses, which brought a fun ending to the day.
After the shuttle relay the results were announced along with the effort/endeavour awards and the outstanding performer awards. This year was particularly close and some pupils were extremely unlucky to miss out on the outstanding performance award, which is based on events won and in the event of a tie, on records set. The effort and endeavour awards went to individuals who are not always recognised for their achievements in sport and fully deserved recognition for their hard work on the day. After the individual awards the overall results were announced with Balmoral being crowned champions.
It was a fabulous Y6 to 8 sports day and we could not be more proud of the children for their effort and hard work on a beautiful day. Well done to all of the pupils involved and to all of the staff who helped out on the day.
