On Wednesday, 18th February TES held the annual Y6 to 8 Sports Day at Salmiya stadium. This year the format was slightly different with Y6 to 8 pupils only taking part and year 5s competing in their own Sports Day at school. This was due to the increase in numbers at TES over the past couple of years and a large number of boys in the Year 7 year group. It meant that 5 groups would compete in the events this year: Y6 girls, Y6 boys, Y7/8 girls, Y7 boys and Y8 boys.
The day began with very poor weather and at one stage before the event started it was touch and go whether it could go ahead. Fortunately the bad weather passed and although a little rain fell during the field events in the early morning, eventually the skies cleared to beautiful conditions for the pupils to compete in.
The early morning competition started with each group rotating around the field events that included javelin, discus, shot putt, triple jump, long jump and high jump. There were some excellent performances and lots of records were set. After the field events the pupils moved up to the stands to eat lunch and then the track events began. The 90m sprints took place first, followed by the 600/800m, 300/400m and finally the 200m. After the 200m were the 4x100m relays. Every event produced some outstanding performances by the TES pupils and each and everyone who took part should be very proud of their efforts. Every pupil took part in at least two events and contributed towards the overall house group team score. At the end of the day the 2015 Y6 to 8 Sports Day finished with a shuttle relay involving all of the pupils in each year group. It was very exciting and the pupils had lots of fun working as a team to bring the day to an end.
At the end of the shuttle relays the overall results were announced and awards were given for the outstanding performers (based on winning performances and records set during the day) and also awards for effort/endeavor by pupils who stood out for their approach. In the overall competition it was very close between three houses up until the final events, but with some super performances in the relays, Sandringham ran out overall champions.
Overall, it was a fantastic competition, there were some outstanding performances, everybody took part in lots of events and everyone should be very proud of their efforts throughout the day. Well done to all for making Y6 to 8 Sports Day 2015 a huge success.
